This month at the studio we are exploring the world of mudras. In Sanskrit, mudra means seal or sign and refers to a sacred or symbolic hand gesture (sometimes body gesture) that invokes an energetic awareness to the body and mind. Anjali Mudra or Salutation Seal also known as prayer position, is a gesture of reverence or divine offering. In yoga this symbol is used for neutralizing and balancing the yin & yang (left & right) hemispheres of the mind and body. This mudra is known to reduce stress and anxiety, calm the brain, bring flexibility to the wrists, and open the heart. It is used in many different asanas while sitting, standing, or lying down.
I invite you to experience this mudra right now by simply inhaling and bringing your palms and finger tips together with gentle pressure. Let the knuckle of the thumbs rest gently against the heart center or the breast bone. Close your eyes and with an exhale gently bow your head to your hands. Stay here for a few minutes breathing evenly and slowly, letting the mind and body settle into stillness. When you feel relaxed, lower the hands, lift the head and feel the amazing benefits of this simple but complex mudra.
Until next Wednesday,
Namaste~
