Discovering the Chakras

This month's theme at the studio is Chakras. Chakra is a Sanskrit word that translates into "wheel" or "turning". It is believed that there are 7 main chakras or vortex-like energy centers located along the spinal column, each corresponding to specific colors, symbols, sounds, and elements.

The 7 primary chakras are listed below (Sanskrit name in italics). The image shows the location of the chakras with their associated color, starting at the base of the spine with the 1st chakra and moving to the 7th chakra at the crown of the head.

7th - Crown Chakra or Sahasrara, located at the top of the head
6th - Third Eye Chakra or Anja, located above and between the eyebrows.
5th - Throat Chakra or Vishuddha, located at the base of the neck.
4th - Heart Chakra or Anahata, located at the center of the chest.
3rd - Solar Plexus Chakra or Manipura, located between sternum and naval.
2nd - Sacral Chakra or Svadhisthana, located just below the naval.

1st - Root Chakra or Muladhara, located at the base of the spine.

As the month progresses I will dive deeper into the individual chakras and provide yoga postures for bringing these energetic systems and the body into balance.
